Case study: Making data from IoT projects usable and analyzing it

IoT projects are among the data initiatives that generate both the most extensive and most complex data sets. This makes it difficult to access important insights that are so important for the further development of products or applications.

The team at HD+ also recognizes the danger and is actively countering the blind flight that has already begun. The ambitious goal: to unite the data silos of the numerous digital touchpoints, device data and the CRM system in a real-time analytics platform. The result enables HD+ to carry out progressive data analysis at a high level and data-based product development. Even with the gigantic volumes of data that the approximately two million HD+ devices continuously produce.

The challenge
  • Scaling of the data platform including data ingestion, big data processing and analytics layer
  • Combination of IoT devices, web store data and mobile data in one platform
  • Live monitoring of device behavior for an environment of various service providers
  • Different behavior of the devices depending on the manufacturer

The new real-time analytics platform processes the enormous volumes of data from around 2 million IoT devices within a new modern IoT stack based on Azure.

From the concept to the real-time analytics platform

The new Realtime Analytics Platform gives HD+ a completely new, in-depth and always up-to-date insight into its enormous amount of data. The organization of this extensive data can be quickly learned and implemented by the customer using the selected technological components. The permanent gain in knowledge is particularly valuable in this respect. Thanks to the newly gained insights and possibilities for data visualization and data analysis, HD+ is able to derive findings and identify future value-adding potential.

Kick-off workshop to create a business case and suitable data strategy

In an initial workshop phase, the diverse requirements for the project were bundled with HD+. The first step is to find out which services and features customers use more or less and the reasons for this. The next step is to discuss a sensible data strategy. The enormous amounts of data that HD+ manages can only be processed in a value-adding way within the framework of a high-level system architecture. The system architecture must be developed and tested closely in line with the specific services.

Development of a prototype including architecture and simulation of device data

A prototype is created on the basis of the information obtained. The architecture is set up in a light version and the device data is simulated using a Python script. The actual development of the prototype is implemented within one day, as the modular structure can be carried out in Azure. This means that initial results can be achieved quickly without having to build the full IoT platform.

Development of a modern IoT stack in Azure (e.g. connector, stream processing, storage)

HD+ and taod opt for the development and use of technological components based on Microsoft Azure. The modular infrastructure makes it possible to create a high-performance IoT platform that can also be adapted to the customer's requirements in the long term. The use of extensive connectors makes it possible to map the entire platform, from device connection to visualization, in the context of Microsoft.

Expansion of the cloud environment for flexible scaling of the expected performance load

The increasing integration of additional devices into the IoT platform requires a high-performance cloud environment. This is the only way to ensure rapid scaling of performance and adaptation of the infrastructure to new challenges. Due to the rapidly increasing number of connected devices, the requirements for the services provided, which are used both within the platform and by external service providers, have also increased over the course of the project.

Playing dynamic content to the TV set

The unidirectional communication from the device to the cloud will be expanded in the course of project development to include cloud-to-device messages, which can be used to implement new test features or visual adjustments to the app for specific devices. While the implementation of new features was previously mostly based on (possibly distorted) customer behavior, the streaming analytics platform enables a statistical evaluation of new features based on actual usage behavior.

"By setting up the platform, we are now in a position to make data-driven decisions and further develop our products in a customer-centric way."
