Case study on building a data foundation on Snowflake

Companies that consist of many different subsidiaries must be able to evaluate their data across the entire group of companies. Fahrrad XXL is an association of independent retailers and acts as a retail and e-commerce platform. It offers a wide range of bicycles, e-bikes, bicycle accessories and fitness equipment. With 15 stores and a comprehensive online offering, Fahrrad XXL has over 100,000 products, including more than 40 renowned brands as well as exclusive private labels.

As a result of the mergers, various subsidiaries and branches have been created, which work with differently structured data sources and key figure definitions. Together with taod and Y42, Fahrrad XXL set up a single source of truth on Snowflake. This feeds the most important source systems into the data warehouse. It also creates and updates the required key figures for downstream use on Power BI.

Fahrrad XXL successfully migrated to the Snowflake Data Cloud and implemented a single source of truth. This reduced the time it took to create management reports from two months to daily updates, cutting the waiting time for insights by over 90%.

From manual ad-hoc reports to a central cloud with real-time insights

With the support of taod and Y42, Fahrrad XXL has converted its data infrastructure to Snowflake. This was a significant step towards increased efficiency and data-driven growth. This strategic decision has enabled the company to reduce its management report generation time from two months to one day. This has created a solid basis for real-time reporting. This enables the company to make quick and well-founded decisions and thus implement its expansion plans.

Initial situation: manual ad-hoc reports and decentralized system and data sources

Fahrrad XXL has ambitious plans for growth, but in order to make the necessary investments, there is a lack of real-time transparency for important key figures such as the management report. It takes about two months to create a uniform view of the entire group of companies. Typically, SQL Server Management Studio and Excel are used. This method proves to be highly error-prone, as manual data reconciliation is necessary.
Data management had to be reconsidered. Fahrrad XXL decided to implement the Snowflake Data Cloud.

Import data into Snowflake from both on-premise and restrictive cloud-based sources

On-premise (MS Dynamics Navision) and cloud-based (MS Dynamics 365) source systems are used. The different data sources are all to be implemented centrally in Snowflake. For the MS Dynamics Navision connector on site, taod and Y42 set up a connection via an SSH bastion.
For the integration of the cloud-based MS Dynamics 365 sources, taod developed a custom data architecture that establishes the data flow to Snowflake. In the final step, the native data warehouse connector from Y42 was used.

Comparison of the most important key figures

When evaluating the data to be transferred, it was found that some key figures are calculated differently. This is due to the use of different source systems. A modular approach to data transformation was used to standardize various metrics from different source systems. The control of the dependencies was made possible by Y42. Y42 also organized the modular data transformation processes. These processes were implemented by taod according to best practices.

Improving data quality and the general visibility of data streams

Previously, the company relied heavily on SQL queries and the use of Excel for data analysis. The challenge now was to establish a system that minimized the risk of data entry errors while improving the traceability of data paths from the source to the final BI report. taod decided to use the modeling function of Y42. This function enables the data flow to be structured and controlled.
Y42's lineage function provided taod and Fahrrad XXL with complete transparency of the data flows. This simplified troubleshooting and also increased the confidence of other stakeholders. Now they could understand the processes of their dashboards precisely and explain them easily.

Result and further cooperation

Following the implementation of Y42 with taod, Fahrrad XXL has established a single source of truth on Snowflake. This feeds the most important source systems into the data warehouse. It also creates and updates important key figures for downstream use on Power BI.

Fahrrad XXL now has a solid foundation for strategic and data-driven investments. The company is able to expand its data capabilities through predictive analytics and other data use cases.
