Aachener Grundvermögen has been accelerating its transformation into a data-driven company for some time now. A new data architecture is intended to help optimize business processes and develop an in-depth understanding of investors. However, it faces challenges such as data inconsistencies, reliance on outdated tools such as Excel and a lack of effective code versioning, which makes simultaneous development difficult and increases the risk of errors and conflicts.
Together with taod, Aachener Grundvermögen is introducing a modern data architecture with cloud solutions and the Data Vault modeling approach. This makes data management more standardized and transparent. The introduction of the new data model facilitates the integration of different data sources and promotes an agile development environment. With this initiative, Aachener Grundvermögen is positioning itself at the forefront of digital modernization in the real estate sector.
Aachener Grundvermögen's project aims to transform the company into a data-driven organization. The core of this project consists of building a modern data architecture based on an advanced tech stack, including the cloud data warehouse Snowflake and the transformation tool dbt. These technological innovations are designed to optimize business processes and enable a deeper understanding of investors.
At the beginning of the project, taod conducts a kick-off workshop to define the business requirements and develop a suitable data strategy for Aachener Grundvermögen. In this phase, the needs of the various specialist departments are collected in order to understand which data is relevant for the letting of properties, contract management and other business processes. Based on these findings, a high-level data architecture is designed that takes into account not only current but also future requirements. This architecture will be closely aligned with the company's specific services and tested for effectiveness.
The team then begins to build a prototype to test the architecture and data model in practice. The taod data engineers develop an initial data model in Snowflake, based on the Data Vault approach, to integrate the different data sources and create a modular and scalable structure. The prototype is used to simulate the integration of various internal and external data sources such as SAP, hystreet and Open Street Map and to validate the effectiveness of the data architecture.
By using Data Vault, the team can create an agile development environment in which feedback is continuously obtained and implemented. This iterative approach made it possible to gradually improve the data model and tailor it precisely to the needs of the specialist departments.
Once the prototype had been successfully tested, the implementation of the complete data architecture and the migration of existing on-premise solutions to the cloud began. This included setting up Apache Airflow to orchestrate the data integration processes and connecting to Power BI for reporting. The cloud-based environment allowed Aachener Grundvermögen to react flexibly to changing business conditions and to scale performance dynamically.
With the successful establishment of the new data infrastructure, the system was gradually transferred to operations. At the same time, regular workshops and training sessions were held to promote acceptance and understanding of the data-driven way of working within the company. The project did not end with the rollout, but is moving into a phase of continuous optimization in which further use cases will be developed and implemented to further improve and expand the data-driven processes.
The modern data structures established by Aachener Grundvermögen together with taod open up a wide range of possibilities for future initiatives, such as the development of AI chatbots and predictive analytics. These innovations will help the company to further strengthen its position as a progressive player in the industry.
